Thank You, Dario

That’s Dario on the right at a Q&A with Ganassi Racing before this year’s Rolex 24.

Another day, another driver announcement that makes me sad. Today, it was Dario Franchitti’s shocking announcement that he is retiring from racing. More to the point, Dario was forced to retire due to the head and back injuries he suffered in that horrific crash in Houston last month.

Dario has always been one of my favorite IndyCar drivers. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him drive at several IndyCar event and at the Rolex 24 this year. Dario had an incredible open wheel career, with three Indianapolis 500 wins and four IndyCar championships. He is truly one of the greats.

While there have been many safety improvements, Dario’s crash in Houston was yet another reminder of how dangerous auto racing today. W e don’t see as many injuries anymore, and usually the driver is able to bounce back. But unfortunately, this is not an injury that Dario is going to bounce back from.

So, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Dario. You definitely will be missed.
